SHAFI Volunteer Spotlight. . . . Cheryl Work Martin.

The most interesting detail may be what people don’t see: Cheryl is in the office every Wednesday, then keeps registrations moving from home.

What does Cheryl remember most fondly about South High’s Class of ’65?

I remember the Class of ’65 as large, spirited, and close-knit, with students proud to belong to South High School. The school offered opportunities for everyone, supported by outstanding teachers dedicated to our learning. Its many clubs and organizations enriched both academic and social development. In my sophomore year, I was invited to join a high school sorority, which led to lasting friendships alongside those I formed throughout my years at South—including with my best friend, who later attended college with me.       

How did Cheryl become involved with SHAFI?

I met a woman in a Zumba class at the recreational center, and we discovered that we were both Denver South High School alumni. She was a volunteer with South High Alumni and Friends (SHAFI) and invited me to help with the upcoming newsletter mailing at the school. Before then, I had not heard of SHAFI or its newsletter, which she shared with me. Soon afterward, I began going to South High School every week to help process memberships and within the year, in February 2016, I became membership chair.

What does she enjoy most about helping alumni reconnect?

After more than ten years of recording membership renewals and donations, many alumni names have become familiar. I value the kind notes alumni often send to thank us for the newsletter and SHAFI volunteers. Many graduates from the 1940s and 1950s have renewed their memberships every year since 1974. When a longtime member does not renew, I usually check why and often learn that they have passed away. In those moments, I feel as though I have lost a friend.

I am also pleased when someone new joins SHAFI. I work hard to retain current members and attract new ones. Most of SHAFI’s members are from the classes prior to the 1970s. This trend needs to change if SHAFI is going to succeed in the future. We need new members from alumni who graduated from South in the 1970s and beyond.

Do you have a favorite reunion memory or a story from putting together the newsletter?

My favorite reunion memory is my Class of 1965’s 50th reunion. Held at a country club, it featured perfect weather and delicious food. Our leader, Ken Dobrovolny, arrived in full old-fashioned golf attire—colorful (purple and white) knickers, cap, shirt, and socks. We had a great turnout, and it was wonderful to reminisce with friends I hadn’t seen in years.

I also enjoy volunteering for reunions held at South High School, where attendees are amazed by the Museum’s extensive collection of memorabilia.
